New this year, Project Mother’s Day is seeking jewelry donations from artisans locally, nationally or internationally to contribute to the annual giving program.

For five years, Solstice Designs and contributors have raised funds so we could handcraft jewelry to donate to children in domestic violence shelters across the country, so they have a gift to give THEIR Mom on Mother’s Day. This ambitious commitment has been successful every year, but is limited by the amount of funds we are able to raise. Now in our sixth year, we are ready to expand the Project and make it larger than ever.

As in years past, Solstice will create a new signature design to donate, which will also continue as a sustaining fundraiser for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and we are now encouraging other artisans to contribute their work to the Project. This honors many artists’ skills and their desire to give, while setting the stage to make this year’s donation the largest one yet with more hands to help.

Solstice will be the collection station for the jewelry, utilizing the help of volunteers to inventory, package and prepare the donated pieces for shipment to the shelters.

We are able to accept donated pieces effective immediately, with the goal to start building the Project right away for 2011. If you are a jewelry designer or know of someone who is, please share the news.

To help keep the gifts equitable for the children, we have a few parameters that we ask artisans to embrace:

* Please, provide necklaces or bracelets only.

* The pieces are shipped to shelters helping families of all denominations, so we ask that any religious references are avoided.

* Pieces are provided to all women in a selected shelter, whether or not they have children, please do not create a piece with Mom or Mother on it.

* Any quantity is graciously accepted.

Please call or email us if you are interested or have questions. 313-724-9400 or Give@ProjectMothersDay.com This is an exciting new venture that we look forward to embarking on with all of you this year. If you want to give, but are not a jewelry designer, cash donations are appreciated and welcome to help build the Project too.

Today, we celebrate the Dearborn Chamber of Commerce for continuing to support the reach of Project Mother’s Day. This June, Project Produce, an extension of Project Mother’s Day launched in the Dearborn Farmer’s & Artisan’s Market.

This was made possible by the generous support of the Dearborn Chamber of Commerce. Always looking for ways to engage residents, support local charities and help encourage local shopping, the Dearborn Chamber provided the venue for Project Produce to be successful, in the Dearborn Farmer’s & Artisan’s Market. Every Friday, Project Produce encouraged consumers to visit the Market, to patronize the participating farmers and share a little with those in need.

Project Produce volunteers collected and delivered more than 70 pounds of fresh produce and artisan food items every Friday to First Step of Michigan, a local domestic violence shelter. Families in transitional housing were given an extra hand up thanks to the generosity of Project Produce supporters like the Dearborn Chamber of Commerce. Learn more about growing your local business in Dearborn by clicking here Dearborn Chamber or by calling 313-584-6100

This giving spirit helped First Step’s families in transition by providing bountiful fresh produce and specialty artisan food items throughout the Market season. Each week, the families looked forward to the arrival of the Project Produce donations, sometimes introducing new locally grown items that were brand new on their tables.

We look forward to continuing to grow Project Produce in 2011. You can still contribute to the Project by clicking “Donate” on the Project Mother’s Day website and entering any amount you would like to offer. Current donations will be used to help secure a used Van for the 2011 season.

Join us in celebrating the Henry Ford Community College Ice Carving Club. This team of talented ice sculpting artists gather each fall semester under the guidance of Chef Richard Teeple, a 30 year veteran of the craft. Starting with 300 pound blocks of ice, the students stack, chainsaw, chisel and sculpt their way to elegant works of frozen art.

Their work can be seen in competitions around SE Michigan every year. The HFCC Ice Carving Club extended a generous hand in supporting Project Mother’s Day this year. We are grateful for their kindness and for sharing their highly coveted artwork as a show-stopping centerpiece for the fundraiser evening. Learn more about the Club here: Ice Carving
